For international trade in specimens of species included in the Appendices of the CITES Convention and in the Annexes to Regulation (EC) No. 338/97, the following documents are required:

  • CITES import permit: necessary to import into the European Union (EU) specimens of species included in Annexes A and B of the Regulation (EC) No. 338/97.
  • Export permit/re-export certificate: required to export or re-export from the EU specimens of species included in Annexes A, B or C of the Regulation (EC) No. 338/97.
  • Private property certificate: certificate issued for pets and that allows an individual to travel through several countries for 3 consecutive years.
  • Traveling exhibition certificate: certificate issued for traveling exhibitions and allowing travel to several countries for 3 consecutive years.
  • Import notification: used for the import of specimens of species included in Annexes C and D of Regulation (EC) No. 338/97. It is not subject to prior authorization upon entry of the merchandise into the EU. The document must be completed by the importer (or his representative) at the time of importation. The form for this document is made up of two copies:
    • Original (sheet no. 1), white.
    • Copy for the importer (sheet no. 2), yellow.
    • For specimens of species included in Annex C, the document proving the origin of the merchandise must also be provided (CITES permit/certificate or certificate of origin issued by the Administrative Authority CITES of the exporting country, as the case may be). For Annex D specimens, it will not be necessary to attach any additional documents.
    • This type of document does not require the payment of any CITES fee.

  • Inspection Document for Species in Trade CITES (DIESAC CITES): necessary for inspection and documentary control prior to customs clearance of specimens of species included in the Annexes to Regulation (EC) No 338/97. At the time of presentation of a merchandise to a Spanish customs office, the Customs Services will require this Document from the importer or (re)exporter as a way of proving that said merchandise contains the CITES specimens covered by the mandatory documents. CITES upon entry or exit from the EU. The request can be made at electronic form or physical form in the case of natural persons.
  • Inspection Document for Species in Trade not CITES (DIESAC not CITES): necessary for inspection and documentary control prior to customs clearance of those specimens of species not included in the Annexes to Regulation (EC) No. 338/97 but which are required by Customs. At the time of presentation of a merchandise to a Spanish customs, the Customs Services may request this Document from the importer or (re)exporter as a way of proving that said merchandise does not contain specimens of species included in CITES . The request can be made at electronic form or physical form in the case of natural persons.
